FAMILY SCIENCE INVESTIGATION: WINOGRADSKY COLUMNS  Nov 13 10am and 2pm; Mimimiun Age 10 (must be accompanied by an adult); $16/parent-child pair; $8 for each additional child Self-sustaining life in a tube. Conditions similar to a nutrient rich lake. Microbes maintaining an environmental balance that keeps us alive. Winogradsky columns have been described in a variety of ways. Invented by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1800s, the Winogradsky column has been a useful tool in studying topics as important as the origin of life, the relationship of different bacterial populations to each other, & answering questions, such as “Is there life elsewhere in the Universe?” Provided with sources of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, & phosphorus, & powered by sunlight, the bacterial populations in the column grow, interact, & separate into layers of color along gradients of oxygen & sulfur. The conclusions drawn from this tool are not only interesting, but relevant to 21st century astrobiology research. Registration Form & Health Form with payment.  Debbie Huston, at 919.707.9840

FAMILY SCIENCE INVESTIGATION: MIGRATION/NAVIGATION - FINDING YOUR WAY  Nov. 14 |                 10:00am  minimum age 6+ (minors must be accompanied by an adult)  Fee: $16/parent-child pair; $8 for each additional child  Without the aid of GPS, maps or assistance from kind strangers, many of us would have difficulty getting from place to place.  Animals too experience challenges in finding their way. Imagine traveling from the top of the world to the bottom with only yourself as a guide. The Arctic Tern makes this spectacular journey every year!  Baby sea turtles, with no parents to guide them, manage to swim their way to a place they’ve never even seen. Registration Form & Health Form with payment. Debbie Huston, at 919.707.9840.

MICRO WORLD ILAB PUBLIC LAB CLASSES  Nov. 17 |10:00am; Every 3rd Saturday of the month, 10:00am – 11:30am, unless otherwise noted.  Age varies by class topic and complexity. For minors under 16, they must be accompanied by a registered adult. For classes with younger children, given the technical nature of some of these classes, an adult child ratio of 1:2 is suggested.  $8 per person; Micro World Public Lab programs offer an opportunity to participate in science classes related to the Museum’s education and research programs, including topics in biology, botany, microbiology, chemistry, mycology and biotechnology.  These classes are especially useful for students looking for additional reinforcement to curriculum goals or extra credit, adults seeking to expand their knowledge of science, or any family group that simply enjoys learning together!  Registration Form & Health Form with payment.

3D MOVIES SHOWN DAILY
Space Junk 3D What goes up doesn't always come down.  After 50 years of launching our dreams into space, we’re left with a troubling legacy: a growing ring of orbiting debris that casts a shadow over the future of space exploration. Space Junk 3D is a visually explosive, sensory expanding voyage into our now-threatened Final Frontier. Experience mindboggling collisions, both natural and manmade.  Soar from the stunning depths of Meteor Crater to an unprecedented view of our increasingly crowded orbits -- 22,000 miles above Earth. Join us as the foremost expert, also known as the "Father of Space Junk," guides us through the challenges we face in protecting them, forging a new age of space discovery.

Dinosaurs Alive 3D Dinosaurs Alive is a global adventure of science and discovery, reincarnating the earliest creatures of the Triassic to the monsters of the Cretaceous – life-sized and life-like.  Audiences will marvel at these great creatures of the past brought roaring to life in 3D.  Journey with renowned paleontologists as they hunt for fossilized clues buried in  Mongolia’s Gobi Desert and Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, uncovering evidence that dinosaur descendants may still walk (or fly) among us today. Realistic and scientifically-accurate computer generated animation brings dinosaurs back to life…in a big way!  20 minutes long
