The Brickyard, the Free Expression Tunnel, and the rest of NC State’s campus is less crowded on the weekends, during the holidays, over the summer, and in the evening.
Believe it or not, our local state college, North Carolina State University, is a great place to explore with kids! We previously shared some great NCSU kid-friendly spots and in this article you'll learn all about the fun you can have getting around those different areas on campus!
If you’re looking for a fun, easy way to explore Raleigh with your kids, then I definitely recommend riding the Wolfline Bus one afternoon. The Wolfline Transit System is NC State’s free bus service. The Wolfline primarily serves university students and employees, but it is also serves the general public! The buses operate every day that classes are in session and run to all three NCSU campuses, three park and ride lots, as well as to housing and apartment complexes near the university. If your little ones love buses, then this is an adventure right up your alley!

There are so many unique mini-adventures that you can plan around taking the Wolfline. Simply pick an area to explore near one of its routes and see where it takes you! There are color coded transit maps along the Wolfline routes, so you can double check your plans at some of the stops. At the larger bus stops, such as the one near D.H. Hill library on Hillsborough St, there are covered seating areas where you can wait for the bus to pick you up.
My favorite routes with my children are the ones that connect the Main Campus and Centennial Campus. There are a few routes that do this, including Route 3, Route 4, and Route 8. I like to start at D.H. Hill library as there is a safe area for my kids and I to wait. I pack lots of snacks to keep us occupies while we wait and while we ride the bus. My kids love getting on the bus and choosing “the best” seats. We have always had positive experiences riding the bus, always eagerly greeted by the bus drivers and the students. Sometimes, we just ride the full route once or twice just for fun. If you’re unsure about taking the leap with your kids, I’d recommend just riding the route (without getting off) for your first time.
Other times, we get off to explore campus or the sites nearby. It’s fun to get off and walk around Hillsborough Street, and grab a bite to eat or get a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. There is a bus stop near the Bell Tower, which is perfect for Hillsborough Street exploration. There is a stop at Mission Valley Shopping Center close to Centennial Campus, which has lots of restaurants and shops. The Wolfline goes right through the Main Campus and Centennial Campus, so you can easily get off the bus and walk around and explore. The bus comes by at regular intervals, so it’s easy to hop back on whenever you’re ready! I hope you give this transportation adventure a shot with your kids--they are sure to love it!
