7 Places to Celebrate Juneteenth

By Akilah Driver, Contributing Writer June 18, 2021

Juneteenth (which is short for “June Nineteenth”) is the day when federal troops finally arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops’ arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

This is a holiday that can be celebrated by ALL Americans, because it was a monumental step towards equality in our nation.
